“Many of the “miracle sessions” I have experienced with my clients have been in hospitals. Getting energetic healing modalities such as Reiki and Healing Touch into our medical institutions would eliminate so much suffering and promote vital self-healing. If there is one way this book may influence the world may it be to encourage energetic healing in hospitals. Even one healing session in a hospital can create enough energetic support to turn a patient’s healing process around. Energy healing in hospitals would greatly shift our medical culture.”
“I also want to say that everyone can hold space in the hospital for themselves or a loved one. Prayer, meditation, or pujas are all so helpful. Even when it does not feel like you are doing anything, let me assure you that you are. You will feel it, experience it, and know it on a deep level the more you do it.
One grounded centered person can shift the energy of an entire room.
We. Are. More. Powerful. Than. We. Have. Ever. Imagined.

This feels like an odd week to announce my book. The orange sky, dark days, and fires have added another layer of craziness to our lives. My family in Oregon almost had to evacuate their home. These are crazy times.
It is not a book about the euphoria of healing. This book is about my experience as a professional healer over the last twenty-five years. There are plenty of wonderful and inspiring books written on Reiki, Healing Touch, and other energetic modalities. This book is about issues and paradoxes in my practice that I couldn’t find in books by other healers, things that took me a long time to understand on my own.
It is about how I learned to trust the healing process and let go of everything blocking me from being fully present for my clients. How I learned to hold an energetic space that would allow others to self-heal.

“It took me over twenty years to develop the ability to completely trust the energy. Tounderstand that whatever happens during a healing is, and will always be, perfect. This trust has become an embodied skill. Now fully embedded in my muscle memory, this healing skill is my superpower.
We are all capable of accessing our unique superpower, and it certainly does not need to take twenty years.”

As a Reiki and Healing Touch Practitioner, my thoughts are a tangible part of the fluid, living intelligence that is the healing space.
Much of the time there are no thoughts during a session, yet when they appear I have learned that they can give me valuable insights into the nature of my client’s healing process.
I remember when I first realized this. Many years ago I began a healing with a new client, and as soon as I touched her leg I instantly started having thoughts about my own childhood. I started thinking about how much I had longed for a dog when I lived in a place that did not allow pets.
I was very judgemental about thoughts that came up in my sessions, especially when I first began my healing practice. Why was I thinking about myself and my childhood? Why was I not focusing on the healing session, the client, and experiencing the healing compassion of sacred space?
When the session was over, the client shared with me how much she had been longing for a relationship that had just ended. She had finally realized in the treatment that even though her heart was broken when her boyfriend broke up with her, he was not the partner she really needed in her life. She had released the longing she had been carrying for months. She told me how clear, grounded and grateful she now felt. A great weight had been lifted.
When she said the word longing, I realized that was the exact energy I had noticed when I had thoughts about not having a dog. My thoughts were obviously a part of this mysterious healing process. I was amazed.
Again I understood that if I really wanted to support people with Reiki and Healing Touch, it was time to let go of my judgments and expectations of what should happen during a healing session. I needed to just pay attention to what was actually occurring.
I would like to point out here that even though “I” was thinking personal thoughts, there was no emotional attachment to the thoughts. Even though the energy of longing was appearing in the space, I was not feeling longing. It’s difficult to describe. Kind of like a kinesthetic awareness of a cloud floating by in the sky, except I am both the cloud, and the sky, and the observer all at once.
Sometimes when I begin a session my brain starts firing off like the 4th of July. There is so much stimulating mental energy and monkey mind in the healing space that sometimes I even see little sparks around my eyes. When this happens, I know whoever I am working with is rebalancing some intense mental energy and I feel a direct connection to it. This connection makes it easier for me to hold, channel and just be present in the healing for as long as is necessary.
There have been so many sessions in which my thoughts have been greatly beneficial to the healing. This could be a very long post if I tried to write about them all. Once I let the belief go that I should not have thoughts, everything became so much easier and I could hold a much more powerful healing space for my clients.

I found this extraordinary video in a CHI (Consciousness and Healing Initiative) email newsletter. Watch how traditional Aboriginal healing (Ngangkari) is being integrated into the medical clinics in Australia.

Last year more than 100 people healing from cancer were supported by the Stanford Healing Partners Program with Healing Touch treatments. The patients reported that the one-hour sessions they received several times weekly helped them better tolerate the cancer treatments and give them more energy. I would like to share Kathleen Prasad’s story about her cancer treatment and metta practice. This article is a great teaching that I have read many times. This is the kind of story that takes me deeper into my daily meditation practice and once again reveals how every one of us makes a difference in this world. Enjoy.
“I realized that no matter what was happening to my body, I could find peace, love, joy and strength in this moment. No matter what, in this moment my heart was perfect and shining bright. The more I could see this within myself, the more I could see it in others, and the brighter I could feel my metta practice shining.

The day after I completed Kathleen Prasad’s Reiki III and Animal Reiki Teacher Training, one of my regular clients ended up in one of the nearby hospitals with an acute case of sepsis.
She had a cyst removed as an outpatient at the doctor’s office. A few hours later she had a life-threatening infection. Her friend, who is also one of my clients, had called to let me know where she was.
The universe had lined everything up for me to be able to go to the hospital in the middle of the afternoon. I had two back-to-back cancellations the day before and had a four-hour spot in the middle of my day.
This type of sudden opening in my schedule has happened several times before, whenI need to be somewhere else besides in my healing space. I am always still astounded at the synchronicity. You would think I would get used to it.
When I got to the hospital,it was obvious how serious the situation was. I did a Healing Touch session, which balanced her energy and allowed her to fall into a deeply relaxed state.
There was no one in the room except the two of us after the session was over. I did not want to leave her alone until her next family member arrived, so I sat by her bed. I realized I had started doing the Joshin Kokyu Ho meditation that I learned in Animal Reiki.
So I went with it. I was breathing into my hara or lower belly, and on the exhale, expanding the energy out all around me and into the room, creating a healing space.
This is a simple meditation technique that is in Kathleen’s book Reiki For Dogs. You can open to page 31 and do it for yourself right after you finish reading this post.
The room changed in a matter of three breaths. There was SO MUCH energy, and in that energy everything was alive. The room was very bright, almost white. My client started having gentle muscle spasms and appeared to be in communication with someone, or something. I often see this state in my healing practice at the office, but usually during the healing. It felt like a spontaneous crack between worlds.
It was powerful. I felt like a bystander. I just held the space, stayed grounded and kept breathing. It was just crazy.
Finally, the energy subsided. I really don’t remember how long it lasted. When I left I knew she was going to be ok.
When I checked in with my client a week after, she said she remembered me coming to the hospital and that the healing was the point where “everything turned around.” She completely recovered.
I emailed my client this post to ask permission to tell her story. I had not shared my experience of the session with her before this. She added:
“Wonderful to read your thoughts and description of what was for me an incomprehensible experience that just left me with an overall sense of well-being… I just know that I remember little fleeting things– like you coming into the room– your hands above me in the bed— a nurse poking her head into the room and your glance at her after which she simply nodded, turned, and left, .. closing the door. I felt utterly and totally relaxed and I distinctly remember ‘calming down’. I distinctly remember feeling that you were in control of the room (why the nurse left?!)”
Let me say right away I was not in control of anything and in these kinds of sessions, the less control I have, the more profound the healing.
The nurse saw what I was doing and gave me the space to do it. My first rule in going into hospitals as an energy practitioner is that I work around the medical staff and their schedule. I have been in a lot of hospitals over the years, and so far the nurses have always been very supportive of healing work.
So the bottom line is: Animal Reiki is good for people, too.

At first this might not seem like the most interesting post I have ever written, yet when you look at the big picture, the vision of integrating energy therapy into our main medical culture, it is really quite exciting.
The Healing Touch Program is dedicated to bringing energy work into our hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and medical culture. Accreditation and Endorsements are essential to this vision because they increase the value, credibility, recognition and professionalism of the Healing Touch Program. So here is a run down on some of the top endorsements and accreditations for my healing practice:
Healing Touch Program is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This organization is the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization, and is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. Healing Touch Program was also the first organization exclusively providing Energy Medicine Continuing Education Programs that had achieved this status.
The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA) is the accrediting body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. The NCCA Standards ensure that certification programs adhere to modern standards of practice for the certification industry. Healing Touch Program joined this elite group of more than 120 organizations that have received and maintained NCCA accreditation on January 15, 2014.
Healing Touch Program is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education Approved Provider. Since I started my healing practice as a massage therapist, I found this extremely helpful in my practice.
