Meditation Is Not What I Thought

This week in my blog I would like to share a significant personal discovery during my month-long meditation retreat last October. A subtle shift in awareness that changed how I experience the world.

I have been studying healing and the nature of consciousness for quite a while now, currently reading books on nonduality and the work of Rupert Spira, Eckhart Tolle, and Frans Stiene. Also listening to and enjoying the awakening consciousness stories of ordinary people from Buddha at the Gas Pump.

Last week I wrote about my healing practice and what I experience in the healing space during a session. I described the dynamic, ever-evolving, morphing healing state I am in five days a week. My question for the last few years has been: What is the relationship of this healing space to Non-Duality, the True Self, Divine Presence? 

Many teachers and healers I greatly respect have spoken of compassion as a quality of this healing space and this higher consciousness. This is where I felt like I was missing the boat. I was not feeling compassion in the healing space. Here is how I finally defined it for myself in a past post:

Compassion is the ability to hold everything in the moment, in the divine presence of All That Is. It is an energetic healing state.

This compassion is not motivated by desire or ambition to heal others. In fact, it had begun to seem like the more powerful and effective the healing space was becoming for my clients, the less emotionally connected I was to the whole healing process. I do not feel any emotions or desires in the actual healing space. I also had periods when I felt so much less ambitious in my everyday life, which was very uncomfortable. Just being in the world was now requiring a new method of navigation that was confusing. There was much less ego. I was finding this stressful.

So, as I began my month-long meditation retreat in October, my intention was to focus on this question.

There was a Supreme Court issue at the beginning of October that had greatly upset me, so when I sat to meditate my emotional body was quite activated. As I began to meditate, I could feel my energy spiraling and unwinding about five feet all around me, with waves of heat and nausea periodically passing through my physical body. It was very similar to the healing space I held for others, except I was feeling my own energy moving. I would like to note here that my clients very, very rarely feel nauseous.

For the first ten days, it was extremely challenging and physically uncomfortable to sit and meditate. I just wanted to run, to move, to get a drink of water, or find my cell phone and text for help.

Then I began to notice a space underneath all the movement. A quiet space. I focused on that, and it expanded over time and became more encompassing, eventually surrounding everything including my energy field and my body. My nervous system and biofield started settling down, and I experienced the heat and waves of nausea less and less.

This new space was utterly still, like a flat void. I could not even describe it as peaceful, certainly not compassionate, yet there was definitely no stress. It was empty.

After 10 days of emotional turmoil arising and releasing this was a welcome shift. I focused on this space the rest of my meditation retreat, and just let all my questions about healing states and consciousness go.

I have now been back from my retreat and working for over twenty days. The healing space and my healing practice appear to be pretty much the same; different every session and still wonderfully effective for each client.

The prevailing thought running through my brain is that there is nothing to seek anymore. Everything is right here, in this stillness, in this emptiness. My intention now is to stay connected to it.

What was the most surprising, and what I most wanted to share with you, is that even though this deeper space is still experienced as emotionally empty, I returned from the retreat feeling more compassion, joy, love, and clarity in all aspects of my life. I can listen to the daily news with much less resistance. The more I connect with this space the more calmer and more peaceful I am.

You would think that connecting with a state of consciousness that creates more compassion would be experienced as compassionate, yet that’s not how it works for me. The experience of emptiness appears to create more compassion.

Meditation is not what I thought.

Radical Self-Care For The World

One of my clients left her accounting job five years ago and opened a healing practice. In the first year, she had as much work as she had time for.

“When I wake up in the morning I am so excited to go to my healing space,” she told me. She has definitely found the work that she loves.

She still comes for healings and breathwork with me to stay in balance. She refers to me as her “mentor,” even though she has accomplished in five years what took me well over twenty. 🙂

Before her sessions, we don’t talk about healing techniques. We most often talk about how to stay grounded as the paradigm of what happens in our healing practice collides with the paradigm of “real” life. How physically and emotionally complex it is to leave the magic of our healing space to wait in line at the local Walgreens. Or listen to the news.

We all experience this paradigm clash. After experiencing the deep peace and energetic support of a healing or breathwork session, reentering the outside world can be noticeably uncomfortable – physically, emotionally and energetically.

Yet, every time we do it, we are creating a higher state of consciousness for ourselves, and everyone around us. Just by holding a peaceful coherent frequency in our chaotic world, we are creating great healing for our planet.

My conversations with my colleague have reminded me that taking time to rebalance and connect with our deepest wisdom is really quite a radical act in these politically crazy times. The grounding, peace, and the unconditional love we reconnect with internally we also take back into our daily life and share with our family, friends, loved ones – even with those we don’t quite love yet.

Self-care is radical.

Healing Between Sessions

I would like to share a few suggestions that have helped my clients manage chronic pain, anxiety, and release stuck energy between healing sessions. These recommendations have created profound shifts in my client’s lives.

Set an intention to keep your attention on whatever is happening in the moment.

Fully acknowledge and give space to every emotion, thought and physical sensation in your body to the best of your ability. When you are overwhelmed and start to compartmentalize your experiences, just be aware of that too. No judgment; it’s all good. Just notice what you notice.

Take time, if even only a few seconds, to acknowledge and create space around more subtle perceptions such as fatigue, restlessness, and anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. Notice any resistance, and do not resist the resistance. You will not believe how interesting this is.

This internal focus is one way to create a stronger connection to your body, as well as expand your consciousness and access deeper levels of your creativity and intuition. Your experience of life can become more effortless, more abundant, and even more fun.

Don’t take my word for it. You may feel exhausted in the beginning but just notice that, too. The pay off is huge.

Healing Music by Peter Kater and Christopher of the Wolves

Music can be a very supportive presence in healing sessions.

Here is a video of Heaven’s Window by Peter Kater from the album Element Series: Etheria. I have been using this track quite a bit in my recent sessions and it is powerful. It is only just under eight minutes, so I set my playlist to “repeat song” and let it repeat for full one-hour healings.

Music sounds very different when in the healing state. The current energies of the day also influence the music I choose for each session. I even find that what works for me one day can irritate me the next, and certain music I have been using for months, can just suddenly not feel “right” anymore.

Note to other healers: At this point, I don’t play any music at all when I work with musicians. They are usually too mentally activated by sound, so I have found it helpful to just work with the ambient noise in the room.

I would also like to share this wonderful CD Aurora by Christopher of the Wolves. I was just playing it for myself in between sessions but suddenly started using it at a low volume for healings and it was perfect. This CD is my favorite.

Anxiety and Healing Part 2

There appears to be a lot more energy moving on the planet now. Everything is in transformation: some things are rapidly breaking down, and other things are healing incredibly quickly. I have witnessed some miraculous paradigm shifts in the last six months. 

As an energetic practitioner, I am seeing clients, a few who I have been working with for years, opening up to new levels of energy in their bodies. In general, this is a good thing, yet a sudden increase in energy can at first be experienced as anxiety.

When I ask people to feel into the physical sensation of anxiety inside their body, they often describe it as a surge of heat or overwhelming force.

Imagine your body’s energy as water, and picture that energy moving inside you within pipes as big as a garden hose. Then imagine if the volume or flow of that water significantly increased inside that hose. Initially, that would feel very uncomfortable, maybe even scary, until the pipes expanded and adjusted to the larger water flow.

One thing that has helped many of my clients adjust to the rising level of energy is exercise. Twenty minutes a day of sweat-producing cardio exercise – such as Zumba, using an elliptical trainer, or dancing – really helps the physical body relax into these new levels of energy.

“In my client practice, I am noticing more people stating having issues of unease and feeling under pressure.  Some state they feel ‘ready to blow’.  I treat a lot of practitioners in my practice, so primarily these clients are doing a fair amount of self-care already (which we know keeps a person in balance through challenge better). They are noticing this pressure building and it isn’t far-fetched to see that it can be tied to the tensions and discord in the world at large.  The news, our government, and beliefs around decency are being bombarded on a daily basis. Remember: As goes the world, so go we. The new clients I have are often stating that they just can’t ‘get by’ anymore as they are having physical symptoms related to stress such as ‘hearts racing’, or ‘insomnia’, or ‘depression/anxiety medication not working as well’.  For those with a racing mind (called the Monkey Mind as it jumps around continuously) or overwhelming emotions, getting into the physical body through exercise can release the building pressure.

Other grounding/movement opportunities exist that have been shown to be effective as well, such as gardening, breathwork, and FAR infrared saunas.

Classes in Energy Medicine may be an effective alternative to ‘going it alone’ as it puts one in community and teaches self-care techniques. Both are big advantages in this trying time!”

Janna’s Energy Medicine classes (which include all levels of the Healing Touch Program) are extremely valuable for everyone at this time. I took the Advanced Chakra Diagnosis and Treatment and it significantly deepened my understanding of energy healing.

So, the bottom line here is exercise and community are wonderful allies in “high energy” times.
