Breathwork saves lives. It saved mine and continues to support and keep me grounded in these ‘Transformative’ times.

“Transformative” with a capital “T.” At this point, I make sure I have time to do a short Breathe after I look at the news.

I envision, and am doing my best to manifest a world where everyone who wants Breathwork has access to it.

That is why I am writing you about this amazing monthly event. I did my first online Transformational Breath® in May. It was remarkable. Dr. Judith Kravitz, the visionary creator of Transformational Breath®, led the session.

Judith did a guided meditation, full Breath session, and then held a thoughtful Q&A afterward. It was at 8 a.m. here in California, and it was worth waking up early. I felt fantastic afterward: open, inspired, and clear all day.

Everyone can sign up; no experience with breathwork is required.

The next date is June 21st, 2025. See you there.

Breathwork Retreat: Four Breath Sessions in Three Days

Doing a Breathwork session every day for three consecutive days is profoundly healing. I just finished facilitating a three-day Breathwork retreat in North Fork, California. This is the first long retreat I have done, and it reminded me of how transformational daily breathwork sessions can be. Witnessing people release and resolve trauma, heal their physical bodies, and experience greater consciousness is such a joy.

The retreat was at Little Yosemite Lodge on Hoyau Creek, near North Fork, California, 25 miles from Yosemite National Park. The land is sacred. I felt so supported and experienced tangible nurturing from the earth. I felt this energy in my own body and during the group sessions. I named this retreat ACCESSING YOUR HIGHEST WISDOM, and being grounded in a beautiful place like this makes connecting with higher guidance so much easier.

Even if you can’t get away to a beautiful place like Little Yosemite Lodge for a series of Breathwork sessions, you can open the space and time in your schedule for a personal retreat. You can book your home retreat sessions with me or another breathworker, breathe online, or use a CD.

Self-care on this level is a radical political act. Our connection to our inner guidance will navigate us through these challenging times.

A Brief History Of Breathwork

The practice of circular breathing to experience higher states of consciousness was practiced in the ancient cultures of India, China, and Tibet.

In the self-awareness era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, two main styles of Breathwork re-emerged in Western Culture: Rebirthing and Holotropic Breathwork.

Rebirthing was discovered and developed by Leonard Orr. He was sitting in a sauna experimenting with ‘conscious connected breathing’ when he experienced his own birth. Leonard credited Shri Mahavatar Babaji for inspiring him at his Ashram in the Himalayas.

One of Leonard’s first clients was Sondra Ray,  who went on to teach Rebirthing worldwide. Sandra is often referred to as the ‘Mother of Rebirthing.’

Leonard wrote on his website about Rebirthing sessions:

“People experienced the peace that surpasses all understanding,”

Stanislav Grof founded Holotropic Breathwork. Dr. Grof had worked with many people therapeutically using LSD before it became classified as an illegal drug. In these psychedelic sessions, Grof noted the breathing pattern, especially at the end of the session,  prolonged the influence of the drug. Stan and his wife Christina began to research breath and breathing patterns and found that achieving non-ordinary states of mind with the breath was deeply and profoundly healing.

I have also heard that Grof was influenced early on by a Breathwork session with Frederick Lehman.

“In 1974, at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, my late wife Christina and I developed a new breathing method of self-exploration and psychotherapy. Because it was based on the healing effect of the holotropic state of consciousness, we called it holotropic Breathwork. The most frequent question that our workshop participants ask me how we discovered holotropic Breathwork. It is difficult to respond with one sentence; I would respond similarly as Albert Hofmann answered the same question about his discovery of LSD-25: “A serendipity and lucky chance.”

There are many styles and schools of Breathwork now, so it is easy to find a practitioner and practice that resonates with you.

Clarity Breathwork was the first Breathwork training I received. Even after experiencing many other schools and breathwork practitioners,  I still feel it is the most powerful format to facilitate for my clients. That said, the woman I breathe with regularly is a Transformational Breathworker and studied with Dr. Judith Kravitz.

Breathwork is my number one life-centering practice.  There is nothing more exciting and satisfying than sharing this healing with others.
