A Business Of Healing By Jeri Lawson

JeriBookCover

This feels like an odd week to announce my book. The orange sky, dark days, and fires have added another layer of craziness to our lives. My family in Oregon almost had to evacuate their home. These are crazy times.

So, that being said,  The book I have been writing for the last year is now available.

It is not a book about the euphoria of healing. This book is about my experience as a professional healer over the last twenty-five years.  There are plenty of wonderful and inspiring books written on Reiki, Healing Touch, and other energetic modalities. This book is about issues and paradoxes in my practice that I couldn’t find in books by other healers, things that took me a long time to understand on my own.

It is about how I learned to trust the healing process and let go of everything blocking me from being fully present for my clients. How I learned to hold an energetic space that would allow others to self-heal.

“It took me over twenty years to develop the ability to completely trust the energy. To understand that whatever happens during a healing is, and will always be, perfect. This trust has become an embodied skill. Now fully embedded in my muscle memory, this healing skill is my superpower.

We are all capable of accessing our unique superpower, and it certainly does not need to take twenty years.”

Healing: Creativity Is Our Power

“Creativity is inherent in being human and is key to how we learn and grow; creativity is our power. And in this day and age of great change, exercising our creativity is a revolutionary act.”

Beth Barany, Writer

Do you feel stuck and uncreative? Do you feel like you just can’t finish that book, painting, or business plan you started? Is it hard to stay focused on your projects as the world appears to be unraveling?

A distance healing may be just what you need to clear whatever is holding you back from being fully present in the moment and connected to your inner guidance. An energetic session may clarify what you are called to create at this time, and what the world most needs from you.

A Reiki or Healing Touch session may also help you realize that the most creative thing you can do is let go of the thought that anything even needs to be created. Maybe being able to fully relax into not-doing is what opens the door to your greatest creative flow and allows you to step into your greatest service for the planet.

Distance healing is powerful.

Distance Healing

The Healing Space

For the last 35 or so days, I have been sharing healing energy at a distance.

When Shelter-In-Place began, I was working with several clients with compromised immune systems, including two women near the end of their radiation/chemotherapy treatments.  They had been doing so well; I persuaded them to try a remote session so I could continue to energetically support them.

The distance healings proved to be very helpful. It was the beginning of a whole new learning curve for me in my healing practice.

Many of my regular clients are now working with me remotely. I also have new clients I have never met in person call me for a session. I could never have imagined this happening before the pandemic.

I have to admit that when I first started distance healings, it was not effortless on my part. It was one thing to do a distance healing once every two weeks or so, but to have my whole practice become nonlocal opened up a new level of energy. I had to learn to stay grounded in a new way. It has taken me a month to relax into it and fully enjoy these distance sessions.

At the start of the pandemic, I also emailed five of my clients who are also healers and wrote about how helpful distance healings could be for their clients. I explained the procedure I used and encouraged them to find the protocol that worked best in their practice. All five enthusiastically reported back about their results.

I have found that distance healings are just as effective as in-body treatments, I swear, sometimes they appear to be even more beneficial. They also take about ten minutes less time.

If you have taken a Healing Touch, Reiki, or any other healing class, try reaching out to friends and family to share a distance healing. Even meditating on the phone with another person is powerful.  If you pray, chant, sing or do yoga, dedicate the beautiful energy of your practice out into the world. Do not underestimate the power of your intention. You don’t have to be a professional healer to create great healing and balance internally and externally.

Poetry In A Healing Session

The quote below is from a much longer email written by a client after her Healing Touch session. She receives weekly healings and has an amazing mental capacity to remember her experience of the energy work with meticulous clarity and detail. She is also a gifted writer and I have learned so much from her writing. This particular session consisted of a long Charka Connection as taught in the Healing Touch Program:
“There were so many different things going on. It’s been a while since there were quite that many things that happened. I swear–every time you shifted to a different part of my body, my experience changed entirely. The one thing that was consistent was that there was a quietness (I wanted initially to say stillness, but that was not the right word) that moved through me. It wasn’t any kind of movement or vibration or heat or anything; it felt most closely like those really still rivers–the way the water can be almost flat but still moving. That’s sort of what it felt running through me the entire time. There were moments of heat and warmth, but not really much more intense energy that that quiet movement.”
Quiet movement.
The way the water can be almost flat but still moving.
It’s poetry.

Entrainment During a Healing Session

I have to warn you right away; this is really a nerdy post about the subtleties of energetic healing. Since many of my readers are Energy Practitioners, I decided I would go ahead and share it anyway.

There have been times in my healing practice when I have sensed a client entraining with my energy field. There are probably many types of entrainment, but this is the physical synchronization of their body rhythm to mine.

I didn’t even know what entrainment was for the first five or six years after I first experienced it, when it first happened I just thought of it as a healing connection of some kind. Then I read about entraining in a science/healing journal and realized I had distinctly experienced it in healing sessions.

I feel physical entrainment happening in sections during the healing. I feel it in my arms and then in my client’s arms, then around my legs and then around my client’s legs, then around my hips… on and on, in no particular order. It is subtle, yet distinct from other energetic alignments.

This has only occurred a handful of times, sometimes for only a minute or two during a fifty minute session, yet it felt a little peculiar the first time I noticed it. It is such a physical connection, rather than an energetic one. In a funny way, it feels a little more personal.

The only time entraining happened for a whole session was during a healing with a woman whose husband had been out of town for the three days. When I felt her body physically entraining to my body, I remembered she had told me it was difficult for her to sleep at night when her husband was away. I realized she must be entraining with him at night, and when he was not there she became energetically “wobbly.”

The client was emotionally and physically out of energetic alignment when she came to the session, but after the session, she left grounded and much calmer.

Healing is the process of assisting others in rebalancing and relaxing their energy so that they can heal themselves. Entrainment is just one of infinite possible ways balance and healing can happen in a session.

See, I told you this post would be pretty nerdy.

One Healer’s Thoughts In The Healing Space

As a Reiki and Healing Touch Practitioner, my thoughts are a tangible part of the fluid, living intelligence that is the healing space.

Much of the time there are no thoughts during a session, yet when they appear I have learned that they can give me valuable insights into the nature of my client’s healing process.

I remember when I first realized this. Many years ago I began a healing with a new client, and as soon as I touched her leg I instantly started having thoughts about my own childhood. I started thinking about how much I had longed for a dog when I lived in a place that did not allow pets.

I was very judgemental about thoughts that came up in my sessions, especially when I first began my healing practice. Why was I thinking about myself and my childhood? Why was I not focusing on the healing session, the client, and experiencing the healing compassion of sacred space?

When the session was over, the client shared with me how much she had been longing for a relationship that had just ended.  She had finally realized in the treatment that even though her heart was broken when her boyfriend broke up with her, he was not the partner she really needed in her life. She had released the longing she had been carrying for months. She told me how clear, grounded and grateful she now felt. A great weight had been lifted.

When she said the word longing, I realized that was the exact energy I had noticed when I had thoughts about not having a dog. My thoughts were obviously a part of this mysterious healing process. I was amazed.

Again I understood that if I really wanted to support people with Reiki and Healing Touch, it was time to let go of my judgments and expectations of what should happen during a healing session. I needed to just pay attention to what was actually occurring.

I would like to point out here that even though “I” was thinking personal thoughts, there was no emotional attachment to the thoughts. Even though the energy of longing was appearing in the space, I was not feeling longing. It’s difficult to describe. Kind of like a kinesthetic awareness of a cloud floating by in the sky, except I am both the cloud, and the sky, and the observer all at once.

Sometimes when I begin a session my brain starts firing off like the 4th of July. There is so much stimulating mental energy and monkey mind in the healing space that sometimes I even see little sparks around my eyes. When this happens, I know whoever I am working with is rebalancing some intense mental energy and I feel a direct connection to it. This connection makes it easier for me to hold, channel and just be present in the healing for as long as is necessary.

There have been so many sessions in which my thoughts have been greatly beneficial to the healing. This could be a very long post if I tried to write about them all. Once I let the belief go that I should not have thoughts, everything became so much easier and I could hold a much more powerful healing space for my clients.

The Ripple Effect Of Every Healing Session

I have an intelligent, very conscious animal-loving friend who is a holistic healing practitioner and speaks three languages.

She is the person I ask to edit my posts for this blog when I am trying to write about the more mysterious nature of energy work. When I am worried I am getting too far out in left field.

This friend also has a very fine-tuned new age bullshit meter, so if she likes the post, I don’t have to worry that I’m being too woo-woo.

Last year she went to a highly respected meditation/coaching conference and came back with an amazing observation.

The workshop was in a beautiful retreat center surrounded by trees, with large windows in the main gathering space. When the thirty participants were meditating in a heart-centered circle, she noticed the strong winds outside stopped. Everything became calm. It happened several times over the course of the five-day workshop.

When she asked the facilitators about the effects of the meditation on the wind, they wouldn’t comment on the phenomenon. Each one just shrugged and said, “We don’t talk about that.” or “That’s not something we address in these workshops.”

The truth is that every time we gather together and meditate, pray or share a healing session, we are affecting everything around us. I will go as far as to say that the peace, the love, and the healing energy we feel in the session also affects the whole plant.

We are all connected.

I know my healing practice has directly shifted my neighborhood around my office, just by listening to the sounds outside before, during, and after my healing sessions.

I was inspired to finish and publish this post by a post called The Ripple Effect of Happiness, written by New York Reiki Practitioner Nathalie Jasper on her blog Dive Into Reiki. Natalie has also written a wonderful book: Reiki as a Spiritual Practice: An Illustrated Guide: Self-healing protocol, meditations and other simple tools to deepen your daily personal practice. I really enjoyed her observations in the healing session – check it out.

So, since you are reading this post now, you know that it passed my friend’s woo-woo meter test.

Healing: The Space To Open and Integrate Life

Every moment in our ordinary, everyday existence is a potential opening to higher states of consciousness and transformation.

Many of my clients are experiencing profound shifts in their awareness as they care for elderly parents, plant gardens, drive to work, and cook dinner. These shifts can sometimes feel overwhelming, even scary.

Energetic healing sessions are the perfect place to integrate, balance, and embody these new energies and expanded states of consciousness.

Two of my sessions this week felt like deep integration sessions for my clients. I could feel all the vibrations and frequencies in their physical, mental, and emotional bodies coming into harmony underneath my hands – like an orchestra tuning up before a concert.

One client said that her body felt so much more stable and her balance was much better after she got off the table. Another woman reported her heart felt so much more open and relaxed, instead of contracted and fearful.

Stay supported during these “interesting” times. Self-care is not a luxury anymore; it is a crucial part of our life purpose and a vital gift to the world.

Orthopedic Breathwork

Last Monday, I went to my first Physical Therapy appointment for my grade three left acomioclavicular joint dislocation and my fractured right wrist. Even though my Physical Therapist looked like she was twelve years old, she was very present and knowledgeable. I found out grade three is one grade away from surgery, so I guess it was a fairly serious injury.

When she asked me how I was doing, I showed her my range of motion by waving my arms around me like windmills – pretty much 100% in both shoulders. I still can’t put weight on my left shoulder in certain positions or carry anything very heavy with my left arm.

She looked a little startled as I was waving my arms around, and at the end of the appointment said she had never seen anyone heal so fast.  I had been a little worried I was moving my shoulder too much, but so far, so good.

I feel Breathwork is the number one reason I am healing so quickly and have not lost mobility.  I have realized Breathwork is a powerful modality for orthopedic injuries. Whenever my shoulder or body feels tight, I take the first 20 minutes available, do a short breathe, and my whole body releases. It’s fascinating to be experiencing the healing from the inside out so tangibly. There have been days when I find don’t need to breathe, and other days when I do two or three breath sessions.

Reiki treatments and meditations have helped me stay centered emotionally. Having a cast on my arm is claustrophobic for me, and Reiki helps me stay grounded as the panicky feeling moves through.

Last Friday the cast came off, and now I have a splint that I can take on and off. I rented a hot tub right away. I am still in a state of gratitude. The right wrist has some more healing to do, and it will still be a while before I can drive.

Still, I feel so grateful. I have had so much support and healing, and have learned so much.

Healing: Finding the Words

I have been searching for years to find the words that describe what I experience as a healer during a Reiki and Healing Touch session. I started to describe it in this post: A Healer’s Experience Of A Healing Session

I have referred to the space I hold, or connect with, or become, as the Healing Space, the Healing State, sometimes Sacred Space, depending on my mood of the day and who I am working with. Nothing ever felt accurate, or specific enough.

While on my recent forced sabbatical because of a wrist and shoulder injury,  I had time to read. The first book I pulled off my shelf was Adyashanti’s The Way Of Liberation and  I have been carrying it around since. I shouldn’t even say I am reading it, I just look at a few paragraphs and then sit in my chair absorbing. I am absorbing the book.

In this amazing little paperback, Adya writes about the Inner Revolution, the process that happens after the discovery of one’s true nature. He describes this inner revolution as “the birth of a living, fluid intelligence.”

That is exactly what I experience in the continually changing, healing space of my sessions that  is different every time, for every person:

A Living, Fluid Intelligence

Page 37. I recommend that everyone immediately get The Way Of Liberation and start absorbing right away.

I will confess at this point that I have not discovered my True Nature. I am still identifying as a physical body and an ego that likes to describe and name things. It is interesting and a bit confusing to note that somehow I have skipped an important step in Adayshanti’s process of Liberation, the awaking part. Awaking must not be chronological.

I now refer to this healing state as the Fluid Living Intelligence or FLI mode. I hold, become, or go into FLI mode in my energetic sessions.

Healing is a mystery that deepens with every session. This mystery reveals how multi-dimensional and precious our human experience is. My ego finds it very exciting to discover the words that best express it.
