Self-Mind Clearing: The Video

Penny Burdick, MD, HTCP is a board-certified holistic family physician. She retired from an active family practice of 31 years at the end of 2011.

Dr. Burdick created a modification of a Healing Touch technique called Mind Clearing that you can easily do on yourself. Self-Mind Clearing is a set of hand positions that balances the energy flow within the brain and relaxes the mind. Her Self-Mind Clearing technique has been approved by the Healing Touch program and was published in the March-April 2015 edition of Energy Magazine.

Try it right now!  Click below to watch the video and follow along with Sita Thompson, who demonstrates the complete technique.

Thank you, Dr. Burdick!

Healing as Ceremony

IMG_7965Sacred Space is healing.

I recently had a session with a woman on the second anniversary of her Mother’s death.

Two years ago she had a session with me a few days right after her Mother’s transition, and also on the first anniversary of her passing.

We lit some candles and chose the perfect music. The session was so beautiful. In that sacred space, that oneness, we both felt a connection to everything that ever was and ever will be.

She told me the sessions provided a place where she could fully “recognize all the feelings that were coming up” and “acknowledge the many layers of sadness and release” she was processing.

She said she felt so much comfort from the healing.

Healing: Relax, Realign and Reset

IMG_0321I have clients who come for regular healing sessions. Some come once a month, some every two or three months, and some people sign up for a short series of healings when they need support during a challenging time.

It’s so easy to get caught up in habitual energy patterns, and let old emotional and mental behaviors run our busy lives. A healing often has the effect of hitting a reset button. After a session, clients report feeling grounded, refreshed and back in their creative flow.

Signs that you are stuck in repetitive energy patterns are: compulsive eating, obsessive thinking, feeling powerless and low energy, lack of mental focus and even just feeling uninspired. A Healing Touch session may help you deeply relax and experience a profound peace that can realign your nervous system, release emotional blocks and jump-start your energy flow.

A peaceful, cohesive energy system makes it so much easier to access deeper intuition, personal guidance and creativity.

I have to add here that if a client is really out of balance, he or she may feel a little spacey right after a healing session. It may take a few hours for their system to adjust to the healing. This is often the case with jet lag, especially after returning from a vacation from halfway around the world. Afterwards, clients report feeling so much more grounded and clear with a faster time-zone adjustment.

The Falling Away

“Come experience the falling away of that which holds you captive, in a safe space where profound healing can occur.”

-Jeanie Ballard, HTCP, CBD, CLC, RMT

When I first saw this quote on Jeanie’s website, everything just stopped.

I just sat for a few minutes and realized this quote says it all. This is what healing is; the falling away.

Thanks, Jeanie.

Seeing and Feeling Energy at the University of California, Berkeley

Energy is a tangible. You can see it, feel it, and use it daily to bring more flow, balance and creativity into your life.

This is what I wanted 20 students to experience when I spoke to a class called Art and Meditation at UC Berkeley last week.

I have been a guest speaker in this class for the last ten years, and it just gets more interesting every year. Speaking as an Energetic Practitioner/Healer, I lead two meditations, show the students how to see energy, how to feel energy, and most importantly, how to have fun doing it.

Fun is the key to becoming more aware of energy, especially in an academic environment. If you try too hard, it’s almost impossible to see an aura.

Take my word for this, I spent years trying too hard. I find it quite amazing that I can now show 20 people in a few minutes how to do something that took me years to figure out.

Maybe being a slow learner makes you a better teacher.

As I have written before in my blog, learning to see energy and auras did not make me a better healer. Seeing and feeling energy fields does help make energy more REAL to someone who is first being introduced to the concept. You can talk about energy all you want, but when you see or feel it, it’s a whole new paradigm.

The class is in Kroeber Hall. In a room without windows that has the perfect lighting for seeing energy fields. If I was giving this talk somewhere else, I am not sure I would even address seeing auras.

Every year, almost every student in the class sees the first layer of the aura, the layer that often looks like a light white-blue glow around the body. Many students say they have already seen this light around people, they just didn’t realize it was part of our biofield.

Feeling the energy is easier than seeing it. I have noticed most people are more kinesthetic, rather than visual perceivers, when it comes to experiencing energy. When everyone in the class partners up and begins to “feel” their partner’s aura, it’s an exciting moment.

Art and Meditation is my dream class. It is taught by Artists Azin Seraj and Professor Katherine Sherwood. Here is part of the class description:

Meditation is arguably the most ancient, powerful, and yet simple spiritual practice in the world. It is known in various forms in nearly all times and cultures, and plays a part in every religious tradition. This experimental workshop will examine how meditation can affect your art both in terms of practice and content.

Part of the incredible reading list is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and  The Field by Lynne McTaggart. They also watch the film Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti by Maya Deren and present the work of Emma Kunz.

OMG, I wish I had this course in college.

Thank you Katherine and Azin, for creating such an incredible class.

Healing Touch For Headaches

Version 2

Headaches are a sign that the energy field is out of balance.

I have had many clients book their first Healing Touch session because they were suffering from recurring headaches. Almost all of them had tried many other healing modalities and/or medications and had decided to try energetic healing as a last resort.

Healing Touch has proven to be very helpful for clients suffering from headaches.

As a healer, my intention for these clients is to assist them in balancing their energy field, not to get rid of a headache. I have no idea if a headache is from stress, allergies, tight neck muscles, a brain tumor or high blood pressure.

I was taught how to find disturbances and energetic blocks in the energy field when training to become a Healing Touch Practitioner. Assessing my client’s energy field, before I even start the healing, lets me know how best to help bring him or her into balance. I use a pendulum to check the energy centers, and my hands to feel the aura bout 3 to 6 inches off the body.

One of the many possible energy patterns I might find in my client’s biofield is that the whole aura feels “heavy” and “sticky.” In this case, I would then focus on clearing the aura with some clearing techniques.

Another energy pattern is a build up of energy around my client’s head that feels “busy” or “thick” or “electric.” If I felt this pattern, I would then hold the feet and do other techniques to help ground my client and let the energy flow through the rest of their body. Having a buildup of mental energy in and around the head is very common, with or without headache issues.

I could go on and on about the millions of energetic patterns I may find in a client suffering from recurring headaches. The point is: no matter what I find in the aura, the key to best serving my client is to help him or her reach a state of peace and relaxation.

A client with balanced energy field heals themselves. All healing is self-healing.

Stand Down: Healing Touch For the Veterans on the Delta

Version 2

The Healing Touch Community in the East Bay is very committed to supporting the Veterans. One of the ways we give back to the Vets is bringing Healing Touch to the Stand Downs.

Stand Downs are held all across the country. They are one to three-day events that provide services to homeless veterans. They provide food, Social Security benefits counseling, shelter, clothes, haircuts, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, various health screenings, and much more. Often there is also massage, Chiropractic treatments and, as you might have guessed, Healing Touch available.

Last Saturday, I participated in the Stand Down on The Delta at the Contra Costa Fairgrounds. Here is a link to an article in the Contra Costa Times that gives you an idea of what the Delta Stand Down was like.

The whole event was so well organized. I just love that. Our Healing Touch coordinators are beyond amazing. There must have been twenty emails preparing us for the event. We had all the information we needed: directions to the grounds, where to park, where to get our shirt and badge, what to wear, what to bring, good snack suggestions – we were prepared!

Being in a healing space from 9 to 5 was quite extraordinary, as well as intense, and all that preparation came in handy. The coordinators were always on patrol in the Healing Touch tent, encouraging us to take breaks, eat snacks, stay hydrated and take good care of ourselves.

The healing sessions lasted about 30 minutes, and on Saturday, the day I volunteered, there were about nine healers. Some Healing Touch Practitioners signed up for both days.

It is wonderful to do healing work in a group. Even though the sessions were one- on-one, it felt like we were all working together. It was an incredibly loving, healing, and supportive environment for the Veterans.

Healing Touch Coordinator Suzanne Mittica wrote:

“I am always amazed at the generosity of spirit, the unstinting extension of personal skills of just darn nice people who volunteer for the many tasks of a successful Stand Down. It doesn’t matter what role we play in the rest of our life, we become the many with one purpose: to show the vets someone cares.”

I would like to thank Healing Touch Practitioners and Stand Down Co-coordinators Nancy Khlafallah and Suzanne Mittica. They spent the last year getting this event organized. Also thank you to Assistant Coordinator Cindy Durant and Helper Maryanne Mitchell.

I posted this video on how beneficial Healing Touch can be for Veterans once before, but it is such a good video, I had to post it again. I can’t link it directly from my blog, so after you click on the video box, then just click the word “YouTube” at the bottom of the video. That will take you right to a YouTube video you can easily watch. This video pretty much sums up why I volunteer at Stand Down:

Healing In the Hospital

Window at John Muir Hospital

Energy work has been an incredible support for my clients when they are in the hospital. After years of healing in hospitals, I am still amazed how remarkably helpful Healing Touch and Reiki can be in these stressful situations.

A few months ago I worked with a young girl immediately after extensive back surgery. Her mother, who did not have much experience with energy work before this, was instantly on board with hands-on-healing. After one of the follow-up sessions, I showed her how she could clear her daughter’s energy field: I just demonstrated for her one very simple Healing Touch technique. Her daughter was very sensitive to the pain medications she was being given, and I knew even five minutes of this simple clearing technique throughout the day would help her immensely.

I want to say right away that I am not a Certified Healing Touch Instructor. I cannot “teach” Healing Touch, but I can “show” a mother a simple technique that may keep her daughter from getting nauseous. I also made it very clear that all healing is self-healing, and her daughter was the only one who could heal herself. I told the mom “just try the clearing and let go of the outcome.”

Here is part of the email she sent me weeks later:

“THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your work with my daughter and me!! Wow – talk about things just coming together at the right time!! I love your energy and spirit and that you were able to do those sessions was so awesome. Also that you took the time to show me how to try to work on her was amazing!! I’m not sure how well I did, but there were some super tough times during our hospital stay. It gave me something concrete to do to try and help my daughter. You were so kind to share that with me!!!!!!! You truly have an amazing gift!!!!

We all have this amazing gift of healing, right at our fingertips.

The Garden At The Office

If my clients have driven a long way to get to my office, I sometimes give them a short tour of the garden. A little moment of nature before a healing is often the perfect transition from road to healing table.
