Unwinding and Physical Release During a Healing Session

Sometimes when people begin to relax on my healing table, they start to release blocked energy in their body with twitching, rhythmic muscle spasms, shaking and kicking. These movements are their body’s innate process of rebalancing and are very positive and healing.

In the last few months, I have had several new clients who were embarrassed by these physical reactions. These involuntary movements can feel so disconcerting that many people with this tendency stay away from yoga classes, meditation retreats, healing sessions and other places in which they may relax and start to spasm in public.

People who can release in this way have a gift! In cranial-sacral therapy, this is called unwinding, and there are many healing modalities that focus on this type of release. In my experience as a Reiki and Healing Touch Practitioner, a series of healings will usually dissipate the energy in the physical body and the spasms will significantly reduce, if not completely fall away, as the biofield comes into alignment. Every person is different, of course, and the rate of healing depends on the level of imbalance and trauma you have to heal. Check out this video “How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness” by Peter Levine. The body can let go of deep trauma through movement.

Once a person is comfortable with unwinding, it can be done at home, kind of like a meditation. I had a client who often readjusted her hip/leg issue during her healing sessions with me and can now unwind and adjust herself on her own. She unwinds in bed before going to sleep at night and feels grounded and peaceful afterward. Another client who was once so freaked out by her body’s tendency to spasm she couldn’t relax in public at all, now unwinds at home and find it releases her anxiety. Unwinding is emotionally healing.

Below is a short YouTube video of a woman having a gentle unwinding:

Here is another video of unwinding in a classroom situation with Joshua Shelan. I am not familiar with his healing work, but this is a good video of a person involuntarily releasing through body movement.

Unwinding is a vast topic, and I have quite a few stories about how it has shown up in my healing practice. The important thing I want to emphasize in this short post is that the ability to release in this way is extraordinarily healing. Some people have it more than others.

If you are someone who has this gift of unwinding, but feels self-conscious about it, I invite you to get a healing, breathwork or cranial-sacral session. Learn to use your amazing healing ability.
